DJI has unveiled its DJI RS3 Mini, an incredibly compact and light alternative to the bigger RS 3 and RS 3 Pro Gimbals. With a weight of less than 1.75 grams (795g) The RS 3 Mini is the most compact entry in the third generation Ronin series of stabilizers made specifically for DSLRs or mirrorless DSLRs. With a weight that is about half and dimensions that of RS 3 Pro, the RS 3 Mini should be more convenient to put in a bag to carry on trips and lets some users shoot stabilized video with just one hand.
The model might be called small in the title however the small RS 3 Mini can support cameras that weigh up to 4.4 pounds as well, and if you’re able to carry a minimum of six pounds with just one arm and you’re able to carry this camera with only one hand. DJI has posted a complete list of configurations that are supported on its website, which includes models like the Canon EOS R5 equipped with an RF24-70mm F2.8 STM lens, Sony Alpha 7S III equipped with an F2.8 24 – 70mm F2.8 GM lens, and the Fuji X-H2S that comes with an XF 18-55 mm F2.8-4 lens. DJI also declares that its RS 3 Mini can stabilize expanding zoom lenses without needing to adjust the balance.
The RS 3 Mini features the same stabilization technology that is found on more powerful RS 3 Pro, which will allow for reliable smooth footage, even when you’re moving, taking shots at low angles and shooting with flashlight modes. Dual-layer quick-release plates will allow the vertical shot (ideal for content on social media) without the need for additional accessories or limiting the gimbal’s motion.
The shutter control wirelessly over Bluetooth is possible by the RS3 Mini’s recording button, provided that you have the right camera to support this function. The RS3 Mini also has an 1.4-inch touchscreen with full-color display, an option to switch between various shooting modes (such like Pan Follow and First-Person View) and an adjustable front dial that can be used to adjust the focus, ISO, and other parameters for cameras that are compatible with it. DJI says you can count on 10-hour battery life. It also claims that it can be charged in less than a minute. DJI RS3 Mini will fully charge within 2.5 hours with a 10W charger that does not appear to be present in the box along with the USB-C cable for charging.
For more functionality for additional features, Ronin’s Ronin mobile app can be used in conjunction with RS 3 Mini to provide additional functions like Timelapse Tracking, Timelapse and Panorama. Ronin accessories, such as microphones, fill lights for external use and handles for briefcases can be added via the RS3 Mini’s NATO port.
The DJI RS 3 Mini is on sale for $369. It’s not going to have the same features of the bigger RS 3 ($549) and RS 3 Pro ($869) and RS 3 Pro, but with the same the price and portability to its advantage it is a great choice. RS 3 Mini looks to be an appealing option for travelers who are frequent or who is new to videography.
