The History of Star Wars Lightsabers

“This weapons is yours for the taking!” Obi-Wan’s famous Attack of the Clones quote is real when examining the meaning behind every lightsaber.

From distinct handles to different colored blades, each lighting saber is completely unique to each individual who is using it. Sith and Jedi are akin and make these amazing weapons.

Lightsaber color interpretations are crucial and, as such, in this post I will go into the deeper meanings of each color, and the meanings associated with them.

Lightsaber Creation

We will first dive into the creative process behind each lightsaber. For Jedi, as a Youngling travel to the planet of ice Ilum to find the kyber crystal to power their blade.

The crystal they come across is not only connected with them, but also the Force. Each crystal has a distinct shade that ranges from blue up to yellow.

However they Sith have a different method of obtaining a kyber crystal to use their red Sabers. They must defeat the Jedi in order to obtain their crystal.

Then they use a process called “bleeding into the crystal” to pour their hate and anger into the crystal to infuse it with the dark side. This will cause the crystal to change from its initial shade to a bright red.

The Jedi as well as the Sith put the kyber crystal in the hilt that they construct. The material, build, and ligthsaber’s hilt’s design are up to those Jedi or Sith who create it.

A majority of people only know the significance of a red lightsaber, compared to green and blue. They do not know the deeper meaning that each color has. Below I will talk about each Star Wars lightsaber color and significance.

Blue lightsabers is one of the colors of lightsabers used by famous Jedi such as Obi-Wan, Anakin Skywalker, Rey and Ki-AdiMundi.

The Jedi’s mission is to defend and restore peace to the galaxy. People who are armed with blue sabers are usually skilled in lightsaber combat.

This is evident on screen in The Clone Wars, as Anakin and Obi-Wan often are at the forefront of battle, fighting bravely to defend the weak, and fighting alongside their Battalions of clones.

Blue also represents qualities like honesty, stability, loyalty, and justice.

Color meaning of green lightsaber

Green lightsabers symbolize security, growth, and harmony. These are yet other qualities that the Jedi are seeking to keep other people safe, growing and collaborating well in the galaxy.

Contrary to those who use blue lightsabers, those wielding green ones are often very strong with the Force. The most famous Jedi include Yoda, Qui-Gon, and Luke Skywalker. They favor fighting only as a last resort instead, they rely more on the Force and peaceful discussions.

Jedi Consulars as well as wise, older Jedi usually have this type of lightsaber. An example of this is Yoda the Grand Master.

All powerful Sith and Inquisitors use red lightsabers. Red symbolizes the power of anger, strength, and hatred. These symbols are all part of the Sith Religion, which relies on each one for their strength.

Emperor Palpatine, Kylo Ren, Asajj Ventress, Kylo Ren, Emperor Palpatine, Asajj Darth Vader all wield a red lightsaber. In the case of Darth Vader and Count Dooku, they did not own a lightsaber with red until they were fully on the dark side and killed a Jedi and bleeding their lightsabers.

Cal Kestis is the only known Jedi who can use an indigo lightsaber. Within the online game The Fallen Order, his sword is a bluish purple hue. It’s one of the numerous colors of sabers which he owns.

This light-saber color symbolizes wisdom, spirituality, and intuition.

First used by the Jedi Temple Guards, the yellow lightsaber is another rarely seen color. In The Rise of Skywalker, Rey also owns the yellow lightsaber.

The color yellow symbolizes warmth, goodwill, and energy. The people who wear yellow sabers have given up a part of themselves in order to hold their positions.

In the case of Rey, it represented her adopting her Skywalker name. While in the case of Temple Guards, they give up their identities for their positions of protection.

In the Star Wars Canon, the only Jedi that has a white lightsaber is Ahsoka Tano. Though she had previously used green and then blue lightsabers, eventually she owned white ones.

White symbolizes purity, peace and positivity. It also symbolizes neutrality, positivity and the beginning of a new chapter. Ahsoka’s white swords are a symbol of her departure to the Jedi. They prove that she’s neither associated with the Jedi or the Sith.

Another color of saber that can be found just in Legends includes bronze. Lowbacca along with Freedon Nadd both owned an saber in bronze. Bronze is a symbol of maturity, a an affinity with nature, and wisdom.

Lowbacca very fittingly held a saber of this color. He was very knowledgeable about computers and biology.
Black (Darksaber)

Similar to the white lightsabers. Only one known black version is found in Canon. The other colors Jedi, Inquisitors, and Sith wield. The Darksaber, however, is the weapon of the Mandalorians.

The idea was conceived by Tarre Vizsla who was the only acknowledged Mandalorian Jedi, the Darksaber was handed down through generations of Mandalorians. Anyone who held it could be heir to the throne to Mandalore.

In contrast to the standard lightsaber, the Blade of the Darksaber was flat in shape. The black symbolises the power of darkness, strength, and mystery.

The film Legends, Galen Marek, the secret apprentice of Darth Vader also wields a black lightsaber. However, unlike the Darksaber’s shape, his is the typical shape of other lightsabers.

Cyan Lightsaber

The Star Wars Canon, there are no cyan lightsabers. However, In Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, Cal Kestis owns one, in addition to his saber indigo. Furthermore, Meetra Surrik and Nikkos Tyris from Legends own one as well.

Similar to Darth Maul like Darth Maul’s saber, Cal’s is double-blade. Its color represents peace and tranquility. Because it’s between blue and green, it also stands for an Jedi who is able to balance their skills with both the Force and battle.

Another color featured another color in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Legends is magenta. The Jedi and one previously assassinated by Emperor Palpatine who were armed with sabers in the color are Mara Jade and Cal Kestis.

The color varies between shades of pink and purple. Magenta Sabers symbolize charm as well as harmony and compassion.

Cal Kestis is yet another owner of a unique saber color-orange. But, there are other Jedi in Legends use this light saber color as well. They include Yaddle the Sith-Talak, a Hord of Sith, and Mandalorian Knights.

Mandalorian Knights Mandalorian Knights make up a group of characters from Legends, once a component of the Jedi Order. They went rogue and attempted to sabotage their own Republic during the Mandalorian Wars.

The orange blades symbolize energy, enthusiasm, and creativity. This meaning could explain why Talak didn’t have an ordinary red lightsaber because he was imaginative and ambitious in his work using the lightsaber.

Everyone who is a Star Wars fan knows the famous person who holds the purple lightsaber Mace Windu. Samuel L. Jackson wanted to make a statement in Attack of the Clones, which is why he asked George Lucas if he could carry a purple light saber.

The High Republic Era, in Legends, Vernestra Rwoh and Ty Yorrick also owned lightsabers with purple blades. In the Old Republic, Jaina, Anakin Solo as well as Darth Revan also had lightabers with purple blades as well.

Purple illustrates ambition, power as well as royalty and. Mace Windu is considered to be one of the wisest Jedi at the Council in a proper position to hold a saber of this color.

Also purple is a blend of red and blue. This combination is significant since Darth Revan changed through the ranks of Jedi to Sith, and back before returning to Jedi again. It symbolizes his change between sides.

Similar to white light sabers, silver lightsabers are available too. Silver sabers are exclusive to Legends. This color represents peace and pure.

As opposed to the crystals found on the ice world, Ilum silver Durindfire crystals reside exclusively located on Tatooine. Corran Horn is the sole Jedi from Legends to have one.

With the variety of Jedi and Sith seen in Star Wars Legends and Canon, unique lightsaber colors fit each. Whatever their personality strengths and weaknesses, their lightsaber color has significance. When the colors are understood they are a representation of who each one is and what they represent.

Just as the Sith use their power for evil, their saber color is a reflection of that. On the other hand it is the Jedi each have a variety of colors to represent peace, harmony, and power they possess. No matter the color, there is a connection and significance.
